This Blog Post Is Haunted (by Nostalgia)

Not all ghosts are scary, some just smell like childhood Halloween. Plastic masks that made my face sweaty, candy wrappers crinkling in the dark, or that weird dusty scent from pulling decorations out of the attic (and that spooky witch that played that crazy sound!)

This post is haunted by the best kind of ghosts: the scents that take me right back to when Halloween meant pillowcases of candy and running around the neighborhood until my electric green glow sticks died.

1. Plastic Halloween Masks

They were uncomfortable, they fogged up instantly, and they smelled like straight-up chemicals. But the second I put one on? I was my character. That plasticky scent will always smell like transformation to me.

2. The Inside of a Candy Pillowcase

Dumping out my candy haul onto the floor was the highlight of the night. But before that? Sticking my face into the pillowcase. It smelled like candy corn, chocolate, Tootsie Rolls, and honestly… a little bit like the closet where that pillowcase lived the rest of the year.

3. Fog Machines

That sharp, sweet fog smell is forever linked with spooky season. Haunted houses, middle-school dances, random garage parties... if there was fog, Halloween was happening.

4. Carved Pumpkins

This one’s obvious, but I couldn’t skip it. The earthy smell of pumpkin guts is equal parts gross and comforting. It’s the official perfume of October.

5. Dusty Decorations

Every year, opening the boxes of decorations from the attic had a smell all its own: cardboard, dust, and fake cobwebs. Honestly? Sometimes the ritual of digging everything out was just as fun as Halloween night itself.

The Takeaway

Nostalgia is its own kind of haunting. The smells of Halloween stick around long after the candy’s gone. And honestly, that might be the best kind of ghost story.

Your turn: What’s the most haunted smell from your childhood Halloweens? Drop it in the comments, or on Instagram @exoh.co. I’ll be there with my pillowcase full of pumpkin-shaped Reese’s.
